The 25th Annual Summer Meeting will find us at the Fort Young Hotel in Dominica, West Indies. Nestled between the islands of Guadeloupe to the north and Martinique to the south, lush, mountainous Dominica is one of the last Caribbean islands to feel the tread of tourist’s feet. Fort Young is Dominica’s premier hotel. The property is an old fort on the edge of a cliff overlooking the Caribbean Sea that has been transformed into a luxury resort. The grounds isa2are both charming and intimate and knowing that the walls were part of an ancient fort adds intrigue and atmosphere to the hotel. The diving will be conducted by Fort Young’s onsite dive operation Buddy Dive Dominica.
In a region saturated by tourism, Dominica remains one of the hidden gems of the Caribbean. Known as the “Nature Island” due to its abundance of natural splendors: 365 rivers, the second largest boiling lake in the world, volcanoes, mountains, waterfalls, hot springs, black and white sand beaches; and below the water, volcanic vents, plunging sea walls, colorful reefs, soft corals, sea turtles and sperm whales. Much of the island is protected under national parks, one of which has been given UNESCO World Heritage status. Dominica is a paradise for divers, hikers, birdwatchers and nature-lovers.
isa4Both the crystal clear water of the Caribbean Sea on its western shore and the nutrient rich waters of the Atlantic on its eastern side bless Dominica. These two factors, combined with the dramatic walls that plunge 1,000 feet down, directly off shore makes Dominica the undisputed diving capital of the Eastern Caribbean as well as one of the most unusual dive locations in the world!

DIVING HIGHLIGHTS: The lush, beautiful scenery that characterizes the topside of Dominican rain forest continues beneath the waters. You will find dense, pristine coral reefs, among the richest in the world. Daily sightings of batfish, seahorses, flying gunards, and all colors of frogfish are not uncommon. There is wall diving, pinnacle diving, reef exploration, wrecks and even two hot springs dives, where you can observe, first hand, Dominica’s volcanic origins. On these dives, you actually see thousands of tiny bubbles rising to the surface from subterranean volcanic activity and feel the water temperature increase dramatically. Experts rate Dominica as a “ must see “ experience for divers of all experience levels.
isa5KEYNOTE SPEAKER: The scientific sessions will be hosted by SUNY Upstate Medical University and will feature as our keynote speaker Joel Silverstein. He is one of the leading specialists in diver training, explorations, and decompression analysis. Mr. Silverstein is the author of three books and six training programs. His is a major contributor of the NOAA Diving Manual and will over 100 articles on scuba diving training, exploration, and technology.
